When I was a young man going through basic training in the Air Force, I remembered a great bit of advice given to me by one my instructors. He informed me that I should be conscience of keeping my superiors aware of my value. I was told that anytime anyone ever paid me a compliment for my services, to thank them for thier compliment and then ask them if they would be willing to share thier appreciation for me with my superiors. I have followed that piece of advice for the last 25 years I and I continue to this day to teach it in my seminars to company employees.
Asking clients or customers to share thier appreciation of you with your supervisors or managers is a great way to keep them constantly aware of the value that you bring to your position and to the company you are working for. It is a simple and humble way to have your horn tooted without you doing the tooting! Is this a selfish act on your part? Absolutely not! You have already been thanked for doing a great job by the customer which means you have earned your appreciation, therefore you have also earned the right to ask the satisfied customer to share thier feelings with your supervisors.
Most supervisors worth thier weight in gold will truly appreciate the positive feedback from the customers you service and will keep that in mind when your annual job performance review comes around. By the same token, you should also be willing to do the same favor for others. Whenever you recieve great customer service from others, ask them for the contact information of their supervisors so that you can brag on them.
It really is a great deal of fun to bless others for thier great service and helping them to be recognized for it. Remember, what goes around comes around. If you are doing a great job and others are letting you know you are doing a great job, then it is only fair that your supervisors are also aware that you are doing a great job.
Try this tip the next time you recieve a compliment and watch your company value go up another notch!
